Balanced and Restorative Justice (BARJ) BARJ consist with the protection of the public interest, providing children that are committing delinquent acts programs of supervision, care, and rehabilitation that provide balanced attention to: The Protection of The Community Defined : The process of contributing to safe communities through prevention, supervision and control We do this by: Identifying the risk Managing the risk through short term liberty restrictions Minimizing the risk through long term internalization Accountability For Offenses Committed Defined : The juvenile offender's obligation to repair the harm to the crime victim and community Juveniles must understand and meet their obligations to "make things right" for victim and community to the extent possible We do this by: Having the opportunity for victim/offender dialogue Through the juvenile paying restitution back to the victim and or community Through the juvenile completing a mandatory amount of community service Through the juvenile writing letters apologizing for their recent delinquent acts The Development of Competencies The process by which juvenile offenders acquire the knowledge and skills that help them become productive and law-abiding members of their communities Pro-social Skills Moral Reasoning Skills Academic Skills Workforce Development Skills Independent Living Skills
