Summer Brush Pick Up Schedule

Borough workers will collect compostable waste (dead leaves, plant material, tree/brush trimmings up to 3" diameter and 6' length) throughout the summer and into fall. Items must be bundled with string or twine (no wire).

Excluded items: Stone, garbage, gravel, dirt, junk, and appliances.

Pickup Schedule:

  • East side of Penn Street: Scheduled Mondays
  • West side of Penn Street: Scheduled Tuesdays
  • Missed items: Picked up the next scheduled week. Must be curbside by 7:00 AM.
  • Alley pickups: Only at Sweet Cherry Court in Holliday Hills.

Upcoming Pickup Dates (2nd & 4th full weeks of each month):

  • June: Week #2 (Mon 12, Tue 13), Week #4 (Mon 26, Tue 27)
  • July: Week #2 (Mon 10, Tue 11), Week #4 (Mon 24, Tue 25)
  • August: Week #2 (Mon 14, Tue 15), Week #4 (Mon 28, Tue 29)

Street Sweeping Schedule for 2023

  • September: Week #1 (5th–7th), Week #2 (11th–13th), Week #3 (18th–20th), Week #4 (25th–27th)

Memorial Benches Placed

Three new metal benches have been installed at the overlook patio of Chimney Rocks Park in memory of Greta Halbritter (1972–2021). Greta was a Hollidaysburg High School graduate (class of 1990), performing arts vocalist, and art teacher in the Hollidaysburg Area School District and at Penn-Mont Academy. The gift was made by her family to continue her legacy.

Building & Zoning Permits

  • It is the property owner’s responsibility to apply for permits. Contractors may apply if authorized as an "Authorized Agent."
  • The signatory block on the permit application certifies that the owner has authorized the agent.
  • If work begins without a permit, the property owner must secure it. Contractors may apply only if authorized by the owner.

Sidewalk Grants

The Hollidaysburg Borough Council has authorized a grant program for residents and property owners.

  • Reimbursement: 25% of the cost for replacement or installation of a pedestrian sidewalk along a public street.
  • Application Process: Reviewed in order received. Program remains open until funds are exhausted or Council closes it.
  • Where to Apply: Borough Building, 401 Blair Street, during regular office hours.

  • July 16, 6:00 pm: Stephanie & the Wild Hearts at Canal Basin Park. Rain location: Hollidaysburg Senior High Auditorium.
  • August 19, 6:00 pm: Family Summer Celebration – Altoona Symphony Orchestra at Canal Basin Park. Rain location: Hollidaysburg Senior High Auditorium.

Street Tree Pruning

The Shade Tree Commission reminds residents to remove low-hanging, pedestrian-unfriendly branches and unsightly suckers from the base of trees.

  • Permits: No permit required for this type of trimming. Permits are needed for more extensive pruning (no charge).

Hollidaysburg Senior High Scholastic Quiz Team

The 2023 team, representing IU8, reached the National competition level this spring. Mayor Joseph Dodson recognized their achievement with a proclamation on June 7th. Pictured are coach Susan Cyran, team member Eric Pick, and Mayor Dodson.

Held on Friday, May 26, 2023, from 6pm–9pm. Over 130 cars attended.
