City Services & Operations

Fall Brush & Leaf Collection (2025) The City of Altoona will conduct brush and leaf collection from October 20th through December 1st. Residents must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Bagging: Items must be placed in brown compost bags with no tape.
  • Placement: Bags must be at the curb by 7:00 AM on collection days.
  • Schedule: Collection is divided into zones based on the day of the week:
    • Wednesday (Blue Zone): Brush on Oct 22; Leaves on Oct 29, Nov 5, 12, 19, 26.
    • Thursday (Orange Zone): Brush on Oct 23; Leaves on Oct 30, Nov 6, 13, 20, Dec 1.
    • Tuesday (Yellow Zone): Brush on Oct 21; Leaves on Oct 28, Nov 4, 11, 18, 25.
    • Monday (Purple Zone): Brush on Oct 20; Leaves on Oct 27, Nov 3, 10, 17, 24.

Community Events & Opportunities

CNA Open House The Training and Education Fund of PA is hosting an open house for individuals interested in becoming Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA).

  • Date: Thursday, October 9th.
  • Time: 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM.
  • Location: Curry Innovation Center, 1425 11th Avenue, Altoona.
  • Details: Hosted by St. Francis University. The event covers training, certification, and resources available through the fund.

PA Blair County Career Link® Job Fair

  • Date: Wednesday, October 15th.
  • Time: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM (Veterans welcome for exclusive entry at 9:30 AM).
  • Location: Jaffa Shrine, 2200 Broad Avenue.
  • Details: Over 80 hiring employers will be present with opportunities for on-the-spot interviews. No cost to attend and no pre-registration required.

National Walk To A Park Day

  • Date: October 10th.
  • Details: Celebrate the city's parks and green spaces. Mayor Matt Pacifico highlighted that 90% of Altoona residents now live within a 10-minute walk of a park.

Public Safety

Fire Prevention Week (Oct 5–11, 2025)

  • Theme: "Charge into Fire Safety – Lithium Batteries in Your Home. "
  • Key Messages:
    • Buy only tested products.
    • Charge devices safely (use hard surfaces, do not overcharge).
    • Dispose of/recycle batteries properly.

Halloween Safety 2025

  • Trick or Treat Time: Thursday, October 30th, from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM.
  • Safety Tips for Kids: Use face paint instead of masks, carry glow sticks/flashlights, decorate costumes with reflective tape, and cross streets at corners.
  • Safety Tips for Drivers: Slow down in residential areas, look for kids at intersections/curbs, and turn headlights on earlier.

City Government Spotlight

The Office of the City Manager This month's "Learn About Your City" feature explains the Council-Manager government system adopted in 2015.

  • The Mayor: An elected official who handles constituent issues, represents the city at conferences, shapes policy with City Council, and promotes economic development. The Mayor does not oversee daily operations of city departments.
  • The City Manager: An appointed position that reports directly to City Council. They provide professional leadership, supervise all city departments and staff, manage budgets, and implement policies.
  • Next Month: The Department of Codes and Inspections will be featured.
