Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month June is designated as Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, a global initiative led by the Alzheimer’s Association to raise awareness about dementia and brain disorders. The campaign focuses on warning signs, risk reduction, and early detection, symbolized by a purple ribbon. Impact: Over 55 million people worldwide live with Alzheimer’s or dementia; more than seven million are affected in the US. Prevention: Brain-healthy habits, including Vitamin D supplements, exercise, quality sleep, and mental challenges, can improve brain health. Symptoms: Beyond memory loss, signs include altered judgment, mood changes, and planning difficulties. Early diagnosis is critical for slowing disease progression. Women Veterans Recognition Day 2026 June 12, 2026, is Women Veterans Recognition Day in Pennsylvania, commemorating the signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act on June 13, 1948. Pennsylvania became the 23rd state to recognize this day in 2023. Event Details: The VA is hosting an event on Thursday, June 12th, from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM. Location: Front lawn of the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center (2907 Pleasant Valley Boulevard), near “The Wall That Heals. ” Activities: Guest speakers, light refreshments, and information on VA programs. All veterans, families, and community partners are invited. National Flag Week The week of June 8th is National Flag Week, with Flag Day on June 14th. This date marks the adoption of the Stars and Stripes in 1777 and the birthday of the US Army (251st anniversary in 2026). Gospel Hill Flag: A landmark since 1990, this 30 ft x 60 ft flag is part of the City of Altoona logo and maintained by the Fire Department. Ceremony: On June 14th at 1:00 PM, the City of Altoona and Central Pennsylvania Community Foundation will honor the flag at Heritage Plaza. Activities: Guest speaker, Proclamation from Mayor Matt Pacifico, Altoona Community Band performance, and a hot dog lunch served by Police and Fire Departments. BESCP Deb Stitt Memorial Golf Outing The Blair Emergency Services Chaplain Platoon is hosting its Annual Deb Stitt Memorial Golf Outing on July 24, 2026. The event supports PTSD awareness and provides funds for counseling services for first responders. Location: King Valley Golf Course (south of Claysburg in King, exits 10 and 15 on I-99). Registration: Advance registration is $400 per team or $100 per golfer (includes 18 holes, cart, and lunch). Same-day registration is $125 per golfer. Contact: Sgt. Salvation Army Barbecue and Car Wash The Altoona Salvation Army is holding a fundraiser on June 20th to support their EMS van, which provides emergency aid to citizens and workers. Date & Time: Saturday, June 20th, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Location: Salvation Army warehouse at 1800 7th Avenue, Altoona. Offerings: For $16, attendees receive a pork barbecue meal (sandwich, potato salad, baked beans, dessert, drink) and a car wash. Altoona Celebrates America’s 250th Birthday Several events are scheduled throughout June to celebrate the nation's bicentennial. Together for 250 – Jaffa Shrine (June 6th): A bash at the Jaffa Shrine Center (2200 Broad Avenue) for ages 21+. Doors open at 4:00 PM with music by Shallow 9 starting at 7:00 PM. Admission is $45, including barbecue and entertainment. Proceeds support Sweat For Vets. Star Spangled Symphony (June 20th): A free concert by the Altoona Symphony Orchestra at PNG Field (1000 Park Avenue). Gates open at 6:30 PM for pre-concert entertainment, with the concert starting at 7:30 PM. Rain location: Altoona Area High School Auditorium. Let Freedom Ring! (June 27th & 28th): A musical tribute at the Misciasgna Family Center on the Penn State Altoona Campus. Tickets are $15 plus fees, available online or by calling (814) 949-5452.
