National Blood Donor Month January is designated as National Blood Donor Month. The current theme, "Why I Give," highlights donor stories and the impact of blood donation. Importance: Supplies are often low in winter due to holidays, illness, and weather. Eligibility: Eligible donors can donate blood, plasma, or platelets every eight weeks. Blood Types: O positive is needed most often; O negative are "universal donors"; B positive are "universal recipients. " Partnerships: The American Red Cross is partnering with the National Football League for promotions, including Super Bowl tickets. Call to Action: Residents are encouraged to find a local donation center or blood drive. Winter Safety Tips The city provides reminders for staying safe during winter storms and cold temperatures. Preparing Your Home: Ensure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working. Check heating systems, fireplaces, chimneys, and insulation. Keep an emergency kit stocked with non-perishable food, water, and a fully charged cell phone. Preparing Your Car: Service the radiator, check antifreeze, and install winter tires. Learn About Your City: Department of Public Works The newsletter highlights the work of the Public Works Department, which manages over 360 lane miles of roadway.
